Mental health disorders are a growing public health concern worldwide, with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions affecting millions of people. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2024) estimates that one in four individuals will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime. Despite this, mental health service utilization remains significantly low, particularly in low- and middle-income countries like Nigeria. In Kano State, where the burden of mental illness is increasing, many individuals in need of mental health services do not seek or receive adequate care (Abdullahi et al., 2023).
Several factors contribute to the underutilization of mental health services in Kano. Societal stigma and misconceptions about mental illnesses play a significant role in discouraging individuals from seeking professional help. Many people in northern Nigeria attribute mental illness to supernatural forces, witchcraft, or punishment from a higher power, leading them to seek spiritual or traditional healing instead of medical treatment (Yusuf et al., 2024). Furthermore, inadequate mental health infrastructure, a shortage of trained professionals, and the high cost of treatment are additional barriers limiting access to psychiatric care.
Government policies on mental health in Nigeria have historically been weak, with minimal budgetary allocations to psychiatric services. According to a recent report by the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health (2023), less than 3% of the total healthcare budget is allocated to mental health, leading to poorly funded psychiatric facilities and limited outreach programs. This lack of prioritization further exacerbates the issue, making it difficult for individuals with mental disorders to receive proper care.
This study aims to examine the various barriers that prevent individuals in Kano State from accessing mental health services. By identifying these obstacles, the research will provide insights into potential policy reforms and interventions that could improve mental health service utilization.
Despite the rising prevalence of mental health disorders in Kano State, the utilization of mental health services remains critically low. Research indicates that less than 10% of Nigerians with mental disorders receive professional care (Ogundele et al., 2024). The underutilization of mental health services is influenced by various socio-cultural, economic, and systemic barriers that have yet to be comprehensively examined in Kano State.
Stigma remains a significant problem, as individuals with mental health disorders are often subjected to discrimination, isolation, and, in some cases, violent treatment from society. Many families hide mentally ill relatives due to fear of societal judgment, preventing them from accessing professional psychiatric care. Additionally, there is a widespread lack of awareness about the availability and effectiveness of mental health services, leading individuals to seek alternative treatments that may not be beneficial (Aliyu et al., 2025).
The limited number of psychiatric facilities and mental health professionals in Kano further worsens the situation. Kano State has only a few dedicated psychiatric centers, and the available hospitals often face issues such as staff shortages, inadequate funding, and limited resources (Bello et al., 2024). This study seeks to address these gaps by exploring the key barriers to mental health service utilization and proposing actionable solutions for improving mental healthcare accessibility in Kano State.
The study focuses on mental health service utilization in Kano State, with a particular emphasis on factors such as stigma, accessibility, financial constraints, and cultural perceptions. The study will be limited by challenges such as difficulty in obtaining accurate self-reported data due to stigma and possible reluctance of individuals to discuss mental health issues.
